Have you ever wanted to learn to fly fish? Now is your chance! Come learn in a supportive community of women. This introductory class will cover what you need to get started: we’ll discuss equipment and jargon, casting instruction and practice, knot tying, fish and insect identification, fishing etiquette and safety. Fly Fishing for Women

Full Course Description:

 A full day class of fly-fishing instruction for women taught by women. Fly Fishing Guide, Monta Hayner and volunteers from Fly Fishing Women of Minnesota will teach students fly casting, fishing knots, fish and insect identification. We will cover cold water conservation, insect hatches, some artificial flies that are successful in Minnesota. You will be exposed to the terms used in fly fishing.  We will discuss how to find public places to fish, stream etiquette and safety. 

Dress for the weather. We will be fishing on the St. Croix River or other local area depending on the conditions. Waders are not required but if you have some or can borrow them please bring them. Otherwise, be prepared to wet wade with closed-toe shoes and quick-dry pants. To fish, a Minnesota Fishing License is required and must be purchased prior to the class. Equipment is available for use during the class. We can discuss minimum equipment needed, ancillary equipment and where to purchase equipment if there is interest.

What to bring:  


  • Current Minnesota Fishing License. 
  • Sun-glasses, sunscreen, insect repellent and hat with brim
  • Water shoes
  • Waders if you have them or can borrow or Clothing you can wet wade with: long pants that do not absorb a lot of water
  • Fly rod and reel if you have one (we will bring equipment to use)
  • Be prepared to be outdoors in wet, muddy conditions, heat and humidity, 


A simple vegan soup lunch will be provided at WEI, or you may bring your own lunch.   

Instructor Bio

Monta Hayner is a teacher and fly fishing guide and the Past Chair of Fly-Fishing Women of Minnesota.  She grew up trout fishing with her family in Michigan and Oregon.  She took up fly fishing 20 years ago after discovering the trout streams of the Minnesota Driftless area.  She has since spent many springs with her brother, Melvin Hayner, fishing the streams of SE Minnesota. Since joining Fly Fishing Women of Minnesota seven years ago she taught beginning fly-fishing classes, become a mentor to club members and a mentor with the DNR MinnAqua fly fishing program. She co-taught the Youth Introductory Class at the Great Waters Fly Fishing Expo for the last five years.
