CSA Workshare: Work on a Certified Organic Farm in Exchange for Produce
Amador Hill Farm and Orchard is a certified organic education and demonstration farm where one of our goals is to teach, learn, and engage the community. Our CSA Workshare program is a great way to build skills in organic farming and develop a relationship with your food and the people growing it.
In exchange for 72 hours of work spread across the growing season, you’ll receive our weekly summer and autumn CSA boxes, equaling 16 weeks of farm-fresh produce between July 11-October 31. Previous farming experience is not required.
On the farm, different days of the week focus on different tasks. We also have some non-farming tasks available this year. Our goal is to provide the experience you are most interested in. Here’s what you can expect (subject to change):
Monday, Thursday, and Friday: Harvesting/Packing for our CSA, Fair Table program, and Farmers markets. Harvesting takes place in our hoop houses and fields. Pulling, cutting, and picking everything from roots, greens, squashes, tomatoes, broccoli, etc. Washing and packing happens in the Apple Barn. Harvesting is done as early as possible in the day with washing and packing in the afternoon. General hours 8am (or earlier if discussed prior) to 4pm. Full or Half day shifts.
Tuesday and Wednesday: Farm work includes our most physical tasks (don’t worry, you can do other things too!) including weeding, field/hoop house prep, transplanting, plant care, thinning, pruning, and farm cleanup. General hours 8-9am to 4 pm. Full day or half day shifts, with recommended morning shift to avoid the heat of the day.
Saturday: Mill City Farmers Market/Marketeer for Workshare participants who enjoy vending and customer outreach. We’d like to have a marketeer help manage the WEI booth at each Saturday Mill City Farmers Market in Minneapolis throughout the season. Training will be provided. General hours: Saturdays 7am – 2pm.
NEW THIS YEAR: North Branch Farmers Market/Marketeer. We’re looking for someone who can work independently at the North Branch Farmers Market Saturday mornings once trained in and ready. The day will start by picking up supplies and produce at WEI, transporting it to and from the market, managing sales at the market, setting up and tearing down our market booth. This person will also distribute printed materials to local businesses and interested customers for WEI program promotion and sales.
NEW THIS YEAR: Twin Cities-Based Catalog Distribution. We’re looking for a Twin-Cities based Workshare participant interested in a 50/50 split between working on the farm and regularly distributing WEI catalogs and brochures to our established list of drop sites (coffee shops, food co-ops and similar) in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Must have reliable transportation.
